okay, so i just watched this special and i was pretty much - how do i say... blown away? makes me want to get the Bible and read it, and analyze it. have any of you heard about this? it amazes me but at the same time i don't know how much is true. the predictions of assasinations, the end of the world, and how to live life.

what are your folks opinions? theories? anything...

It's been proven that virtually any desired result can be found in almost any large body of text using Drosnin's methods. The fact that there is no definitive source text for the bible, and that even the oldest texts are likely themselves translations and possibly inaccurate transcriptions, and that the books were written by many different hands over hundreds (or thousands) of years makes it even less likely to me that hidden messages were deliberately embedded within them.

Two good examinations of the phenomena:

I have to agree with Oliver. The Bible is not something we should be using as some sort of code to predict the future. The stories in the Bible were written down centuries ago in languages long dead. The stories themselves are part of a centuries old oral tradition. We all know what happens to stories spread by word of mouth. Something that was altogether mundane becomes elaborate and fantastical. Factor in that these stories have been translated several times, inaccurately I might add, and you have something that really isn't what it started out to be.

I'm afraid I've gotta agree with Oliver on this one (not that I have a problem agreeing with Oliver, just that it would be cool if this were true). The whole premise, as I understand it, is that the Bible is the unerring word of God which contains hints about about the future. The main problem I have with this is that it's pretty much been proven that this book is the work of multiple people over many centuries and that material has been lost, edited out, lost in translation and generall screwed up. It's also a reflection of world views that are millenia old, a lot of which are quite outdated. Also, as Oliver says, you could plug this type of theory into the latest Tom Clancy techno-thriller and get pretty much the same results.

Anyway, how are you Shelley? Long time, no see. I hope you and Larina are well.

I believe in the Bible very much. It shows you so much, sometimes it is hard to understand what God is trying to show us.
I have been reading the old testament. Its amazing how close the Jewish families were. My question is where did the other people come from? The Jewish were the promised people but then you have the philistines, people from the land of Nod and Gentiles. I have always had these questions.
