i like a good ghost story... please share yours!
i have a ghost or something that visits me at night sometimes. it's called a "choking ghost". i've had this problem for about 10 years now and i've just learned to accept it.
one night as i just lay to sleep i found myself tossing and turning. when i did finally fall asleep i was disturbed by a sudden pressure. the pressure felt as if someone or something was trying to choke me in my sleep but get this - i am totally awake and aware. i can't move, i can't breathe. i try to shake myself to gain strength but i am helpless. then as a car passes my house (coming down from the hill) the lights brighten my room and reveals a shadow of a person sitting on my chest. a few moments later, the shadow is gone.
this used to happen to me every month but only in the past 5 years has it been less and less. now i only get this a few times a year.

Re: ghost stories
Fri, March 19, 2004 - 4:03 PMGood googlie-mooglie, Shelley! That sounds like a friggin' poltergeist! Have you ever felt like it really wanted to seriously harm you (not that having someone sit on your chest isn't serious)? Has anyone ever been with you, or were you alone? That would be an awful thing to have happen.
When I was around 20, I went into a really old house up in the North Carolina mountains with a friend of mine. He needed to pick up something there. It had been built in the early 1800s. When we walked into the kitchen, I just FELT something. The hair stood up on the back of my neck and I had the very distinct feeling that something knew I was there, that it felt the house belonged to it and I wasn't welcome. I told my friend I'd wait in the car (it seemed rude to stay where I wasn't welcome) and he came out a few minutes later.
"What's wrong?" he asked.
"There's something in there," I said. "I got the distinct impression it wanted me to leave so I did."
"Oh, that," he said. "That's nothing to worry about. I've felt that plenty of times and nothing's ever happened. It's harmless."
It was good that my friend knew about it and believed me, but he might have warned me! -

Re: ghost stories
Sat, March 20, 2004 - 5:25 PMDamn, damn, damn. I just don't know what I would do if that happened to Peg and I couldn't do anything about it. Has this happened in different houses or just one place? Do you think this is something that's just fixated on you? I'll keep you in my thoughts. I'm glad you have someone who loves you and who will watch out for you. Sounds like you've got a keeper there! :-) -

Re: ghost stories
Sat, March 20, 2004 - 7:36 PMyes, this happens almost everywhere i go... but i must say it takes a few months before it happens. i think it is just fixated on me and there must be something about me that it can't seem to leave me in peace. strangely i know it won't harm me beyond what it is doing now and i really think that with time it will eventually lose interest. as it is now, it hardly happens.
and yes, larina is a definate keeper! best thing to ever happen to me. she also feels helpless when it happens but i just tell her to shake me because it seems to help. -

Re: ghost stories
Sun, March 21, 2004 - 5:50 AMSounds like you're in better shape than the man who was hounded to death by a poltergeist. I'll see if I can find some info on him. Thank God/dess it's losing interest. I wonder why it takes time to find you after you move and if it's pissed caused you don't leave a forwarding address.
I know I already said this, but I'm glad you've got a quality person there with you. My best to the both of you.

Re: ghost stories
Fri, March 19, 2004 - 6:13 PMI don't have any fear of ghosts, the only one I have personally had exposure to is my great-grandma. She used to sit in her rocking chair in the living room and whistle late into the night.
and in our last house, the man who owned it died and when we got it there was one room that was always freezing cold. The cat loved that room though, often you would find her lying on her back on the floor as if someone was rubbing her belly. The doors used to lock on their own too, but only when my exboyfriend was the one trying to get in...
My exboyfriend has told me of similar experiences as you have, about something hitting him or holding him down. I like to thing it was just me, astrally going back in time to get rid of him before i met him (not nice, i know). -

Re: ghost stories
Tue, March 23, 2004 - 9:15 AMI have only had a brief encounter. The night my mother passed away. I had returned there to help care for her, she had terminal breast cancer. I arrived on a Tuesday.....by Friday., she had become lethargic, showing signs of sliding downhill, so my father had her taken to a Hospice. I stayed with him, to drive him to see her. She went to Hospice on Sat. Sunday night, I had just called my now husband on the phone, at 12:30 am, and was getting ready to call it a night, when I recieved a huge SHOVE........This was at 1 am......the time my mother died....we got the call a little while after that.

Re: ghost stories
Wed, March 24, 2004 - 3:42 PMI don't know how these stories could have slipped my mind, since they happened so recently (relatively, anyway). I worked at a small public library in a village near Pittsburgh in 2002. The library was in an old house and had portraits of the original residents. We were convinced that we had a ghost in the building and that it was the wife. We would be standing at the desk with our back to the computer when it would suddenly emit a beep. When we looked, the computer screen would have random numbers typed on it. That happened so many times, it got to be a running joke at work. We'd just say "She's at it again." We were actually a little annoyed that she never gave us the next day's winning lottery numbers. There would also be cold spots in the building and there were times when the hair would just stand up on the back of my neck. I'd just say hello when that happened.
Lately at work, we've been having some problems too. I guess you could call them problems. There's only one other guy where I work, a big warehouse full of records. In the eight months I've been there, I've noticed that the copier will sometimes be turned off a few minutes after I've turned it on. This is a mechanical switch that goes off, not a "power save" mode that it goes into. My coworker said it happens all the time. It came up today because he asked me if I turned the copier off yesterday afternoon (I hadn't). He also told me he's heard noises like someone moving boxes back in the stacks. Several times I have had the feeling that someone was watching me (a really strong, creepy feeling) and have smelled cigar smoke. Really cheap cigars, too. Not good ones like the ones I sometimes indulge in. It's interesting, and people think my job is boring!

Thu, March 25, 2004 - 12:07 PMShelley I also think it has something to do with you being Hawaiian. I think when your spiritually connected to a land weirder stuff can happen to you. It may be an ancestorial thing. Otay see you on Sat. Girl. -

Re: ghost stories
Thu, March 25, 2004 - 5:39 PMI'm curious, how do you think it might be an ancestoral issue? This might be a silly question, considering how the ghost treats you, but do you get the impression it's trying to hurt you, get your attention or communicate in some way? How would an ancestor be malicious? If these are stupid questions, please forgive my ignorance. I really want to know for my own edification. -

Re: ghost stories
Mon, April 25, 2005 - 11:25 PMI have never been attacked by a ghost (hopefully neve) by a demon yes. I think i had sex with my first husband who had died in the house we were living in. He commited suicide. I have lived in about 3 haunted houses. I also saw a jogger at about midnight jogging by our van and looking at us, it wouldnt had been so strange but we were driving between 65 and 70 miles and hour.

Re: ghost stories
Mon, April 25, 2005 - 11:49 PMI have had the same experience, a dark shadow figure sitting on my chest and choking me. It only happened when I was alone, and only in my former home. A friend of mine told me to keep a small bowl of purified sea salt by my bed at all times. For whatever reason it did the trick. Once I began to keep the bowl on the night stand I never had another visit. I also cleansed the whole house with a white sage smudge, I figured better safe than sorry.

Re: ghost stories
Tue, April 26, 2005 - 9:05 PMIt sounds like "old hag syndrome" to me. Basically a vampiric spirit that has attached itself to you and periodically draws sustanence from you. I was attached by one once, and never again. I managed to shake it off that first time by force of will. I've made it my business to know how to defend myself psychically since then.

Re: ghost stories
Tue, April 26, 2005 - 9:15 PMEvery house I have ever lived in has been haunted, including the trailer where my family lived when I was born (according to my mother). Currently I live in a house that has at least three ghosts. There's a man who occupies the first floor. It is the spirit of a former owner who died in the livingroom of a heart attack. Occassionally he causes the smell of cigars. There is also a female ghost that may wander the stairs and my room. I'm pretty sure she dates from the fifties when the house was a whore house. She sometimes plays music from the fifties, but if I call anyone's attention to it, the music stops. Just today I heard someone sigh at my shut door. And there is also something very nasty in the attic. I go up there as rarely as possible. The attic spirit makes awful smells (like feces) and has walked over my head when I'm at my computer. Since the only door to the attic is in my room and locked, there is no way anyone could have been up there at the time. The attic ghost is very territorial. I've always been convinced that something is hidden up there which it does not want us to find. My mother's boyfriend's father owns the house. He says when they first moved in, they found a photo in the attic of a man in a German uniform. My mother has taken pictures with her camera all over the house and gotten orbs and strange "smokey" images, especially around my infant nephew. Since we got her a digital camera last year, there's no chance of it being flawed film. -

Tue, May 24, 2005 - 2:05 PMI think if more people were sensitive enough (or just paid attention), they'd be amazed at how much goes on around them.
